What i learned from interning at a company for half a year with a bunch of gossip addicted coworkers: if they have a enough job applicants the first thing people do is select based on what's on your CV, this includes grades, experience, skills you say you have, etc. Then when they've basically filtered out the trash they invite people over for a talk and test whether they weren't bullshitting about their skills, the ones that are still there get to talk with the other coworkers and socialize a bit and that together with any previous connections gives an idea of how well someone fits in the team. They then select the one person that has the correct skill set and if they can they go for the one that has the connections, but connections only serve as tie breaker. If you're not up to the job you wont get it unless it's an easy job that you can learn along the way. Or if you know someone high up enough that he can overrule all previous steps.
